ENGLISH LANGUAGE BY PRAKASH RAGHUPATHI

...our first language! :)

i was thinking about how funnily we interpret, and use English in our daily lives. By 'we', i mean Indians.

(Disclaimer): Applies to the Indians i noticed, including me). :)

its funny: the way we use wrong words in the wrong context, stutter with pronunciations etc. Here's presenting a few examples:

1. i face this problem too. But i noticed it only when a friend pointed out. Its so difficult to say the word 'temporarily'. it slows us down-when we speak. :)

2. Some people cant say 'she' properly, or for that matter any word that starts, or ends with the sound 'sh'. A friend of mine tried saying 'she' for four years. he just couldnt. he finally said it right (when he was drunk).

3. i was sitting with a few friends at Cafe Coffee Day, and a guy walked in with a girl. He pulled the chair for her. One of my friends' (a girl) noticed it. But she probably didnt know that a word called 'chivalry' existed. She ended up commenting, "You guys should learn from him. See, how chauvinistic he is!"

4. As a kid, for a long time, i pronounced 'consciousness' as 'conconscious'. Because i was too lazy to read it the right way. I finally figured out the right pronunciation in the 8th standard.

5. For all those who dont know, 'legitimate' is pronounced as leh-ji-ti-mit. its not pronounced as leh-gi-tea-mateh >:-(

6. shepherds don't drive a car. chauffeurs do. :)

Englisss will, and always be a bhery phunny language ;-)
